  1. “That is a good sign.”
    “But I feel so annoyed.”
“That is how a person feels after a concussion, out of sorts and sometimes sad, Mrs. Wheeler” said the nurse.
“I’m never sad. Please call me Solange.”
“My name is Marie; I am your night nurse. Just call if you need anything.”
    “Yes, thank you. Goodnight.”
The nurse dimmed the lights. Solange plugged her ear buds into her phone and pressed music. Within minutes she was soundly asleep.
The morning brought new challenges. Her arm and her head hurt. Solange opened her eyes to pain. The light from the window blind cracks her eyes. And she was hungry. She pressed the buzzer.
When the nurse came in, Solange said, “I’m hungry. Can I eat today? I need a shower. My head is killing me. Like a hundred little hammers beating my brains to crumbs.”
The nurse smiled and told her as soon as she was off the IV she could have something to eat. Dr. LaBoute would let her know when he made rounds. The nurse gave her a pain shot but Solange knew in seconds that it was not as strong as the last shot. The headache leveled out but still hung on the left side of her head.
Restless and peevish, Solange lay still, trying to remember what happened. She remembered the olive green wool sleeve she had tried to grab. Who was it? And why had she been knocked down? An accident or something else?
